Monster of the Week

Role-Playing Games

Monster of the Week is an urban fantasy and horror tabletop role-playing game developed by Michael Sands and first published in 2012. It is inspired by villain-of-the-week television series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural and The X-Files, and it is a Powered by the Apocalypse game with a simpler ruleset than Dungeons & Dragons. One player is the Keeper of Monsters and Mysteries, who prepares enemies, settings and puzzles, while the others each play a hunter built from a playbook that represents a character archetype from monster media. Players roll two six-sided dice when the Keeper calls for it, and the Keeper reacts to those rolls rather than rolling for their own characters. Evil Hat Productions published a revised edition in 2015, and later expansions include The Tome of Mysteries and The Codex of Worlds.
