Etherscope

Role-Playing Games

Etherscope is a steampunk role-playing game published by Goodman Games in 2006, built on the d20 system and using the d20 Modern rules. Its setting is an alternate world in which the fifth Platonic element, Ether, a form of cosmic energy, is discovered and tapped as a power source. That knowledge lets the British empire flourish and artificially prolongs the culture and values of the Victorian age. The title refers to the Etherscope, a difference engine devised by American inventors in the 1950s that interacts with Etherspace and is owned only by the rich and powerful. The setting also features enginauts, cybernauts with mechanical implants, Etheric gauntlets, the Etherjack implant for direct interface, and user-made avatars and sprawling Etheric Domains.
