Cortex Plus

Tabletop role-playing game system

Cortex Plus is a toolkit role-playing game system designed by Cam Banks that evolved from Margaret Weis Productions' earlier Cortex System, first published in 2010. It is a roll-and-keep system in which players roll one die from each relevant category and keep the two highest dice results to resolve an action. The system originally belonged to Margaret Weis Productions before being acquired by Fandom in 2019, and it served as the foundation for several licensed tabletop role-playing games, including Firefly, Marvel Heroic Roleplaying and Battlestar Galactica. Marvel Heroic Roleplaying, built on the Cortex Plus system, achieved significant acclaim, winning the 2013 Origins Award and the 2012 ENnie Award for Best Rules. The design emphasizes narrative flexibility, letting players roll based on situational relevance rather than strict procedural mechanics, with results in which rolled ones introduce unexpected narrative complications into the story.
