Cortex Classic System

Tabletop role-playing game system

The Cortex Classic System is a tabletop role playing game rules system created by designer Jamie Chambers and published by Margaret Weis Productions. It was originally developed for the Serenity Role Playing Game, based on the Firefly television series, then reused for the publisher's later licensed Battlestar Galactica and Supernatural role playing games before being released on its own as a standalone system. Its mechanics are built around dice pools drawn from character traits and a Plot Point resource players spend to influence outcomes, with a related advancement track letting characters grow between sessions. The Serenity Role Playing Game built on this system won the 2005 Origins Award for Gamer's Choice Best Roleplaying Game of the Year, helping establish Cortex Classic as a well regarded framework the publisher went on to license across multiple properties.
