Circular chess is a chess variant dated to 2001 and played by two players on a circular board. It follows the basic rules of chess, including castling and capturing en passant, but adapts them to a ring: the pieces are set up as in normal chess, and a ninth diameter, or file, is added with unplayable spaces in the first two circles, or ranks, which stops pieces on the first rank from attacking each other directly. The board layout was patented in the United States by its designers. It is distinct from Byzantine chess and from another game also called Circular chess that was developed by David Reynolds, which uses a different board layout, setup and rules. A game is listed at sixty minutes.
