Beowulf: The Legend

Board game

Beowulf: The Legend is a 2005 designer board game created by Reiner Knizia with artwork by John Howe, published by Fantasy Flight Games, Kosmos and Sophisticated Games. It draws on the Old English epic poem Beowulf, casting participants as followers of the hero competing to earn gold and cards that convert into victory points across the course of play, using a board alongside cards and tokens to track progress. The design centers on resource management combined with a press your luck element, asking players to weigh the risk of pushing further for reward against the safety of banking what they already have. Bidding is a core mechanic throughout, implemented through three distinct auction types, two open bidding variants and one closed bid auction in which every participant pays regardless of whether they win the item.
