A Game of Thrones: Second Edition

Collectible card game

A Game of Thrones: The Card Game Second Edition is a living card game published by Fantasy Flight Games from 2015 to 2020, based on George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels and designed by Christian T. Petersen, Eric M. Lang, Nate W. S. French, and Damon Stone. Unlike a traditional collectible card game, a living card game sells fixed, non-random card sets, and this title is not backward compatible with the original 2002 edition it replaced. Two to six players, with support for larger multiplayer and team formats, each lead one of eight great houses of Westeros, building both a draw deck and a separate plot deck before play. Over a series of rounds players reveal plot cards to set resources and initiative, then contest military, intrigue, and power challenges to gain the upper hand across the map toward King's Landing and the Iron Throne. A player wins by accumulating fifteen power, tracked as houses claim strongholds and win key confrontations. Fantasy Flight slowed new releases from 2019 onward as it exhausted new content drawn from the novels, and since 2020 a volunteer group called the Global Operation Team has produced unofficial expansions to keep the card pool growing.
