Wolfpack (wargame)

Modern Conquest and War Games

Wolfpack, subtitled Submarine Warfare in the North Atlantic, 1942-44, is a solitaire board wargame published by Simulations Publications Inc. in 1974 that simulates a four-month period of the Battle of the Atlantic. The player controls German U-boats while the Allied convoys and their escorts are run by the game system. The map shows convoy zones between Ireland, Greenland, Newfoundland and the Azores. In each scenario twenty convoys cross the ocean by automatic random movement, ten in each direction, and twelve of them are dummies that only a close examination by a U-boat reveals. The player spreads the boats to search for convoys and, once one is found, converges them as a wolfpack to attack. Four one-month scenarios set in 1943 (February to May) grow harder as convoy defences improve, with optional rules for U-boat upgrades and production. Jim Dunnigan designed it and Redmond Simonsen did the graphics; it was a free pull-out in Strategy and Tactics issue 47 and also sold boxed.
