Tigris and Euphrates

Board game

Tigris and Euphrates, known in German as Euphrat und Tigris, is a tabletop strategy game designed by Reiner Knizia and first published by Hans im Gluck in 1997. Set along the rivers of ancient Mesopotamia, players place tiles representing temples, settlements, farms and markets while cultivating leaders in four color-coded categories, and success depends on avoiding conflicts that could topple a player's strongest area of influence rather than simply expanding it. The game was highly anticipated among German gamers before release on the strength of Knizia's reputation, and it went on to win the 1998 Deutscher Spielepreis. A stand-alone card game adaptation followed in 2005, carrying the same tile-based conflict system into a smaller two-player format.
