The Rubik's Cube is a three-dimensional combination puzzle invented in 1974 by the Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. It was first called the Magic Cube, was licensed for sale in the United Kingdom in 1978 and reached international markets in 1980, when it also won a German Game of the Year special award for Best Puzzle. Each of the six faces carries a single colour, and an internal pivot mechanism lets every layer turn independently, mixing the colours until the player restores one colour per face. The standard colour arrangement has been fixed since 1988. Around 500 million cubes had been sold by January 2024, making it the best-selling puzzle and toy, and speedcubers compete under the World Cube Association.
