Prince Valiant: The Story-Telling Game

Role-Playing Games

Prince Valiant: The Story-Telling Game is a licensed tabletop role-playing game published by Chaosium in 1989, based on Hal Foster's comic strip. Players take the roles of knights in King Arthur's court in adventures styled after the comics, and the game is aimed at children and young adults with an emphasis on storytelling; designer Greg Stafford claimed it was the first story-telling role-playing game. The core mechanics fit on a single page and replace dice with coin flips: attribute and skill points stand for coins, and a player succeeds if any coin lands heads, while in combat the side with the most heads wins. A Storyteller leads, but every player owns part of the scenario. Knights split seven points between Brawn and Presence and assign nine points among fourteen skills, and Fame points track achievement. The 128-page book holds twenty short adventures, and Nocturnal Media released an updated edition in 2019.
