Mage: The Ascension

Role-Playing Games

Mage: The Ascension is a supernatural fiction tabletop role-playing game first published by White Wolf Publishing on August 19, 1993, at the Gen Con gaming convention. It was the third of the five initial World of Darkness games, released after the success of Vampire: The Masquerade, and it is set in a fictional modern Earth where supernatural beings quietly shape everyday life. Players take the part of Mages, ordinary people who Awaken to the ability to reshape reality. The central conflict of the game's metaplot is a four-way struggle among the Nine Mystical Traditions, the technocratic New World Order, the insane Marauders and the Nephandi. Its distinctive magic system rates a character in nine Spheres of knowledge, namely Correspondence, Entropy, Forces, Life, Mind, Matter, Prime, Spirit and Time, and lets players propose effects freely for the game master to judge. A second edition appeared in December 1995, a revised edition in March 2000, and Onyx Path Publishing issued a 20th Anniversary Edition in September 2015. The second edition won the Origins Award for Best Role-playing Rules in 1995.
