Jutland (board game)

Modern Conquest and War Games

Jutland is a naval board wargame for two players, published by Avalon Hill in 1967, that simulates the World War I Battle of Jutland in the North Sea. One player commands the British Grand Fleet and the other the German High Seas Fleet. The game works on two levels. A strategic search phase uses pencil marks on a hex grid map to find the enemy fleet, and once the fleets meet play shifts to a tactical level with no map board, where die-cut ship counters are set at scale distances and moved and fired using rulers and tape measures, much like a miniatures game. It needs a flat surface of about four by five feet. It was the first wargame designed by Jim Dunnigan, who went on to found Simulations Publications Inc. Praised for its mechanics but criticised for complex rules and long play, it was revised in a second edition in 1974.
