El Grande is a German-style strategy board game for two to five players, designed by Wolfgang Kramer and Richard Ulrich and first published in 1995, appearing in German through Hans im Gluck, in English through Rio Grande Games, and in Dutch through 999 Games. Players take the role of Spanish nobles, the Grandes of the title, competing during the Renaissance for control over nine regions of the game's map of Spain through an area-control system built around placing and moving knight pieces with limited, secretly chosen strength. The game earned wide recognition on release, winning both the Spiel des Jahres and the Deutscher Spielepreis in 1996, and its success led to several expansions and at least one alternate edition.
