Damath

Displacement and Capture Games

Damath is a two-player educational board game from the Philippines that joins draughts-style play with arithmetic. It is played on a checkerboard in which the playable squares carry mathematical operation symbols and every piece carries a number. When a piece captures, the score is worked out by applying the operation on the landing square to the values of the capturing and captured pieces, so players practise calculation while competing for the highest total. Kings score double, moves are timed, and many variants exist, from whole numbers and fractions to polynomials and trigonometry. It was devised by teacher Jesus Huenda of Sorsogon province, drawing on a 1975 student project, and is widely used in Philippine schools to teach mathematics.
