Cheskers

Chess-Family War Games

Cheskers is a two-player abstract strategy game that blends chess and draughts on an ordinary checkerboard. Board Game Matcher dates it to 1948 and notes that it first appeared in a chess fanzine. The starting position is the one used for checkers, except that each player's four back-rank pieces are replaced by two checker kings, one bishop and one cook, which is the inventor's name for a piece that leaps like a camel. Bishops move and capture as in chess, while cooks jump to the far corner of a four-by-two rectangle, so both are confined to dark squares. A checker man that reaches the far row may be promoted to a bishop, a cook or a checker king. The aim is to capture every enemy king, and stalemating the opponent also wins.
