Blue and Gray is a two-player abstract strategy game designed by Arthur Jaeger and Henry Busch. It was granted a patent in 1903 but possibly was not published until Sid Sackson included it in his book A Gamut of Games. Each player begins with 17 guards and one captain placed on the line intersections of a 9 by 9 grid. The object is to advance the captain to the center of the board along an outlined path of 17 steps, and the captain can only advance when the next step on that path is unoccupied by friendly or opposing guards. Guards move along the lines in any direction except over the central point and capture one another by jumping, as in checkers. A game lasts about twenty minutes, and a later variant called Super Blue and Gray developed the idea further.
