Advanced Squad Leader, usually shortened to ASL, is a tactical level board wargame that simulates squad sized combat actions of World War II. It was originally marketed by Avalon Hill Games and later supported by Multi-Man Publishing, with Don Greenwood credited as a designer on the system. Play takes place on hexagon-divided mapboards using cardboard counters that represent individual soldiers, weapons and vehicles, governed by a detailed rulebook supplemented by many expansion modules. The system is built for two or more players, though solitaire play is possible, and a single scenario commonly runs 360 minutes or longer. Combined with sales of the earlier Squad Leader game it inspired, the system had sold more than one million copies by 1997, making it one of the best known tactical wargames ever published.
