1835 (board game)

Board game

1835 is a railroad operations and share trading board game belonging to the 18XX series of games, designed and originally published by the German company Hans im Glück in 1990, with Mayfair Games later distributing it in the United States. Set on a map representing the historical German railway network of the mid nineteenth century, the game has players found and manage competing railway companies, issuing and trading company shares while directing train operations to generate revenue that is paid out to shareholders. As with other titles in the 18XX family that trace their lineage back to the original 1829 and 1830 designs, success depends on balancing personal share ownership against decisions made as a company director, since a director's choices affect the value of shares held by every investor in that company, not only their own. 1835 is notable within the 18XX series for its German historical setting and for introducing mechanical variations, such as regional pre-unification states and later national consolidation, that reflect the real political fragmentation and unification of German railways during the period it depicts.
