Commerce is an 18th-century gambling card game of French origin, related to thirty-one and considered a likely ancestor of whisky poker and stop the bus, with documented rules recorded from 1769. It is played by three to ten people, or more informally by any number, using a deck of 52, 40 or 32 cards depending on the variation, with play passing clockwise. Each player tries to finish holding the strongest possible three-card combination, most often three cards of one suit or three of a kind. Players improve their hands by exchanging cards with a shared pool of table cards, continuing around the table until a player signals satisfaction with their hand, at which point a showdown determines the winner.
