Schnapsen

Trick-Taking Card Games

Schnapsen is a two-player Austrian card game in which each player tries to be the first to collect 66 points by winning tricks and by declaring marriages, which are matched pairs of kings and queens. It is played with a short deck, so almost every card carries weight, and it is a point-trick game of the marriage group, closely related to the older German game Sechsundsechzig. Players hold their running totals in their heads rather than on a scoresheet, and a player who claims 66 without having reached it pays a penalty. A key decision is when to close the talon, the stack of undealt cards, after which the hands are played out with strict rules about following suit. The game is popular in Austria, where large tournaments are held, and related games are played in several other European countries.
