Ulti

Trick-Taking Card Games

Ulti is a trick-taking card game for three players and is described as the national card game of Hungary. It is played with a 32-card pack of the Tell pattern, the standard Hungarian deck whose four suits are Acorns, Leaves, Hearts and Balls. Each hand deals ten cards to each player and leaves two in a talon, which every bidder in turn may pick up and exchange before naming a contract. The player who wins the auction chooses trumps, or plays without them, and takes on the other two players, who work as a partnership. The game takes its name from one of its bids, in which the declarer undertakes to win the last trick with the lowest trump, the seven. Ulti belongs to the marriage group of games and is related to the Czech game Mariáลก, and these games all ultimately derive from the old French game Mariage. Outside Hungary it is little known.
