GURPS

Role-Playing Games

GURPS, short for the Generic Universal Role Playing System, is a tabletop role-playing game system published by Steve Jackson Games and designed to run any genre with the same core mechanics. Its core rules were first written by Steve Jackson and published in 1986, at a time when most comparable systems were tied to a single story or genre, and four editions have appeared since. Sessions are run by a game master who adjudicates the rules while players each control one character. Most actions are resolved by rolling three six-sided dice and trying to roll under a skill number, and characters are built from points spent on four basic statistics plus advantages, disadvantages, perks, quirks and skills. The GURPS Basic Set holds the core rules, and more than a hundred supplements add optional rules and settings. It won the Origins Award for Best Roleplaying Rules of 1988 and entered the Origins Hall of Fame in 2000.
