Gonnect

Space and Territory Games

Gonnect is a two-player strategy board game invented by João Pedro Neto in 2000 and played with ordinary Go equipment, on a 13 by 13 board in the author's preferred form. It uses the rules of Go with two changes: passing is not allowed, and a pie rule lets White exchange places with Black as a first move to keep the opening fair. The aim is connection rather than territory. A player wins by building a chain of connected stones between any two opposite sides of the board, or because the opponent has no valid move. Because each player needs both connecting chains to win and blocking chains to stop the opponent, the author notes that the game differs substantially from Go despite sharing its rules. It was proposed on his Games of Soldiers pages in July 2000.
