What Next? (party game)

Party and Word Games

The title What Next, written with a question mark, belongs to a cooperative choose-your-own-adventure party game designed by Ed Naujokas and published in 2021 by Big Potato Games. The players work together as a single group to follow a pre-made adventure from its first location to its ending. On each turn the next location card is read aloud and the group chooses which path to take; when a card carries an event, the reader must complete a dexterity challenge, and a rotating time wheel decides whether the easier day side or the harder night side of the event card is used. A failed challenge sends the group down a more punishing route and makes the reader add an oddly shaped piece to the Tower of Peril. If that tower collapses before the story ends the group loses, and if the adventure is completed first they win. The game works much like a gamebook and was praised by reviewers for its unusual blend of genres and its accessible set-up, with some noting limited replayability. It can be played solo and also suits a small group.
