Universe: The Role-Playing Game of the Future is a science fiction tabletop role-playing game published by Simulation Publications, Inc (SPI) from 1981 to 1983. The first edition appeared as a boxed set in March 1981, and a second edition in 1982 gathered most of the components into one softcover book published by Bantam. It is set in the mid-24th century, when humankind has colonized many star systems within about 20 light-years of Earth under a Federation of Planets, and interstellar travel depends on rare psionic navigators. Characters are classless, built through dice rolls and tables, and skills are resolved with percentile dice against listed base chances and improve through use. Reviewers praised its organized rules for generating planets and its poster-sized Interstellar Display star map, but criticized its dense encounter and combat system. SPI was taken over by TSR in 1983, and TSR ended production of Universe in favor of its own science fiction game, Star Frontiers.
