The Great War in the East

Modern Conquest and War Games

The Great War in the East, subtitled Four World War I Battles, is a collection of four board wargames published by Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI) in 1978. It simulates battles of the First World War on the Eastern Front and the Italian and Austrian front, where combat was more fluid than the static trench warfare of the Western Front. It is a quadrigame: four separate two-player games that share one set of rules, Serbia/Galicia, Von Hindenburg in Poland, The Brusilov Offensive and Caporetto 1917, each with 200 die-cut counters and a paper hex grid map. Turns alternate in an I Go, You Go system and each represents three days, and units must be supplied and within a set distance of their command headquarters. It reached eighth place on SPI's bestseller list, and Decision Games later republished two of the four games.
