The Duke (board game)

Chess-Family War Games

The Duke is a two-player abstract strategy board game from 2013, designed by Jeremy Holcomb and Stephen McLaughlin and published by Catalyst Game Labs. It reworks the idea of chess around double-sided tiles. Each tile carries a different set of movement patterns on its two faces, so after a piece acts it is flipped and offers a new set of options on the next turn. Players therefore choose not only where to move but also which pattern they want available afterwards. New troops are drawn at random from a bag, which adds a little chance to an otherwise tactical contest. The aim is to capture the opposing Duke. A game takes about thirty minutes, and its listed mechanics are grid movement, pattern movement and a square grid.
