Spider is a type of solitaire and one of the more popular two-deck solitaire games. According to its source the game originated in 1949. Its name comes from the eight legs of a spider, which refers to the eight foundation piles that must be filled in order to win. The win condition is therefore tied directly to the foundations: the player has to complete all eight of them, and the name keeps that number in mind. Because it uses two decks rather than one, it stands among the larger members of the solitaire family of card games, and its popularity is part of why the lead singles it out as one of the more popular two-deck solitaires.
