Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes

Role-Playing Games

Mercenaries, Spies and Private Eyes, often shortened to MSPE, is a tabletop role-playing game first published in April 1983 by Blade, a division of Flying Buffalo, covering modern espionage, mercenary combat and private investigators. It was designed and written by Michael A. Stackpole. Its mechanics derive from Flying Buffalo's fantasy game Tunnels and Trolls with a skill system added. Attributes are determined by random roll, skills are bought with Skill Points in levels whose cost rises steeply, and the core mechanic is a saving throw made by rolling two six-sided dice plus an attribute. Skills can be coupled loosely with any attribute. A second edition came from Sleuth Publications three years later.
