Eclipse (board game)

Modern Hobby Strategy Games

Eclipse: New Dawn for the Galaxy, usually called simply Eclipse, is a strategy board game in which each player leads a human or alien civilisation to prevail over the others in a galaxy built from hexagonal tiles. It was designed by Touko Tahkokallio, produced by Lautapelit.fi and first released in 2011. It is a 4X strategy game: on each turn a player takes one of six actions, which are building, exploring, influencing, moving, researching or upgrading, and every action spends resources of money, materials or science, so resource management is central. The galaxy is laid out in three rings of tiles, most of which are drawn face down and placed during exploration, with the player choosing the orientation to open links or block rivals. Three expansions followed, Rise of the Ancients in 2012, Ship Pack One in 2013 and Shadow of the Rift in 2015, and a second edition, Second Dawn for the Galaxy, appeared in 2020. The game won the Golden Geek Board Game of the Year award for 2012 and was adapted as a video game.
