Cityfight: Modern Combat in the Urban Environment

Modern Conquest and War Games

Cityfight: Modern Combat in the Urban Environment is a two player board wargame designed by Joseph M. Balkoski and Stephen Donaldson and published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) in 1979. It depicts a hypothetical Cold War era urban battle in a West German city following a Soviet invasion, focusing on the close quarters, building to building combat that conventional open terrain wargames of the period struggled to represent well. Both players use identical mapboards of the same city, but enemy units are kept hidden and only appear once they are actually spotted by the other side, a double blind design intended to correct the unrealistic long range visibility that had been a recognized weakness of SPI's earlier urban combat wargame Sniper!, and to better capture the confusion and short sightlines of real street fighting.
