Chivalry & Sorcery

Role-Playing Games

Chivalry & Sorcery is a fantasy role-playing game first published in 1977 by Fantasy Games Unlimited and created by Edward E. Simbalist and Wilf K. Backhaus. It was an early competitor to Dungeons & Dragons, the designers having been dissatisfied with that game's lack of realism. According to Michael Tresca, it embraced a realistic approach to medieval France in the 12th century, with feudalism and the Catholic Church, was one of the first games to use the term game master, and was one of the first to put the setting ahead of the mechanics. It focused more on medieval chivalry than on fantasy and had a complex rule set from the start.
