Careers is a roll-and-move board game for two to six players in which each player decides for themselves what counts as winning. At the start, every player secretly writes a personal success formula, a simple sum that splits a fixed total of sixty points between fame (stars), fortune (thousands of dollars) and happiness (hearts), and the first player to meet or exceed their own formula wins. Pieces travel round the main board and into one of several career paths, such as big business, college, politics, Hollywood, farming or going to sea, and the original 1955 edition even offered an expedition to the moon and uranium prospecting. Later editions replaced some of these careers to follow changing ideas of vocation. A typical game lasts roughly forty-five minutes to an hour. Parker Brothers first released it in 1955, after the sociologist James Cooke Brown developed and self-published the idea, and he is better known as a science-fiction author and the creator of the constructed language Loglan.
