Brede Mette

Matching and Shedding Card Games

Brede Mette, also recorded as Bræ'e Mæt, is a Danish card game that originated on Funen and is played by two or more players. It is described as reminiscent of Rakker, a game from North Jutland, and it has been played in Denmark since at least 1950. The game uses a standard 52-card Danish pattern pack with the jokers removed, aces high and twos low. Each player is dealt three cards, the rest form a face-down stock, and the card turned up beside it names the trump suit. The Queen of Diamonds is special because it cannot be beaten, only passed on or picked up. Play centres on laying out cards of equal rank, which the next player must beat card by card, pass back with a card of the same rank, or pick up, with hands refilled to three cards from the stock.
