Botifarra (card game)

Trick-Taking Card Games

Botifarra is a point-based trick-taking card game for four players in fixed partnerships, played in Catalonia in the northeast of Spain and in parts of Aragon, the Balearic Islands and the north of the Valencian Country. It is a historical game that has also been played in many other parts of Spain, in bars and coffee shops alike. It is closely related to Manille, from which it takes its mechanics, but its rules reward deduction and reduce the effect of luck. Partners sit opposite each other, the game is usually played to 101 points or more over several hands, and it uses a Spanish 48-card deck in the suits of Coins, Cups, Swords and Batons numbered 1 to 12. Points come mainly from the value of the cards in each trick, with the nine, called the manilla, worth five points, and each trick won also adds one point.
