Boot Hill (role-playing game)

Role-Playing Games

Boot Hill is a western-themed tabletop role-playing game designed by Brian Blume, Gary Gygax and Don Kaye, and first published in 1975. Kaye died unexpectedly before it appeared. It was the third role-playing game released by TSR, following Dungeons & Dragons and Empire of the Petal Throne, and it takes its name from the Wild West term for a cemetery. TSR marketed it to take advantage of American enthusiasm for the western genre. The game introduced some new mechanics, including percentile dice, but its emphasis on gunfighting over role-playing and its lethal combat system limited its appeal. It was issued in three editions over fifteen years and never reached the popularity of Dungeons & Dragons or other fantasy role-playing games.
