Billard Nicolas is a French tabletop game of skill in the billiards family, invented by Nicolas Redler and patented in France on July 30, 1894, then first manufactured the following year by Jean-Anatole Jost in Paris. The circular wooden board carries a track ringed by a band holding four pivoting bellows that players use to blow a small cork ball toward their opponents' holes while defending their own. A ball that falls into a player's own cavity costs that player a point, so the four-player, roughly fifteen-minute game rewards defensive restraint rather than aggression, ending when a set point total is reached and awarding the win to whoever has accumulated the fewest points. Redler later opened an entertainment venue named for the game near Paris.
