Bauernschnapsen is a trick-taking card game for four players in two partnerships, and it is one of the most popular card games in Austria. It is an elaborated four-player form of the two-player game Schnapsen, which in turn grows out of the German game Sixty-Six. Partners sit opposite each other and play clockwise with a short pack of only twenty cards, either French-suited or German-suited, in which each suit holds an ace, ten, king, queen and jack carrying card points of eleven, ten, four, three and two. The distinctive feature is the auction: starting with forehand, players bid contracts ranging from an ordinary game to Bettler, in which the declarer must lose every trick, and up to demanding undertakings such as winning all five tricks or holding a whole suit. A pair that holds the king and queen of a suit may declare them for extra points. A team wins by reaching twenty-four game points over several deals, and opponents may double the stakes by calling Kontra.
