Base Set (Pokémon)

Trading card game set

Base Set, known in Japan as 1st Starter and Expansion Pack, is the first set of cards issued for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, developed by Creatures Inc. It was released in Japan on October 20, 1996, published by Media Factory, and reached North America on January 9, 1999 under Wizards of the Coast, which held the English language license at the time. The set contains 102 cards whose creatures are drawn from the first generation Pokémon species introduced in the original Game Boy games, mixing basic and evolved monster cards with trainer and energy cards needed to play. Base Set established the visual style, rarity symbols and rules structure that every later Pokémon Trading Card Game expansion built on.
