Ars Magica is a tabletop role-playing game set in a version of medieval Europe and the Levant around the year 1200, in which the beliefs of folklore and the High Middle Ages are treated as literally true. Players take the part of magi, members of an organization of wizards, together with their allies and their mundane and supernatural enemies. It was developed by Jonathan Tweet and Mark Rein-Hagen at Lion Rampant, and its first edition appeared in 1987. The fifth edition, written by David Chart, was published in 2004 by Atlas Games, which still produces new material for it. The game is noted for its troupe system, in which players share the storytelling role and each keeps several characters, and for using medieval Latin terms for its Hermetic magic system.
