Rock paper scissors is a hand game for two players in which each simultaneously forms one of three hand shapes representing rock, paper or scissors, with rock blunting scissors, scissors cutting paper and paper covering rock, so that each shape beats one of the others and loses to the third. Games of this simultaneous-throw, cyclical-outcome type are documented in China for centuries before spreading to Japan and then internationally in the twentieth century. It is widely used today as a simple, equipment-free way to make a quick decision or settle a dispute between two people.
