Yatzy

Yatzy is a dice game popular across the Nordic countries that belongs to the same family of roll and score games as Yacht and Yahtzee, and it is also related to the Latin American game Generala and to the English game of poker dice. Play involves rolling five dice and, over a turn allowing up to two rerolls, choosing which dice to keep in order to build combinations that fill a scorecard of designated categories, such as pairs, straights and full houses, similar in structure to poker hands. Once a scoring category has been used it cannot be scored again, so players must plan which combinations to target as their card fills up, and the player with the highest total across all categories wins. Yatzy can be played solitaire, purely for personal high scores, or by any number of players taking turns, making it a flexible pastime for both individuals and groups. Its Scandinavian popularity has kept regional scorecards and house variants common alongside the standard rules.
