Bo Bing (game)

Bo Bing is a Chinese dice game from Southern Fujian, traditionally played as part of the celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Mooncake Festival. It is traditionally played with six dice and a china bowl, and it has been a national-level intangible cultural heritage of China since 2008. The game dates back to the 1600s, when it is said to have been invented by the general Koxinga of the Southern Ming, with his lower officer Hong Xu, to lift the morale of homesick troops stationed at Amoy while planning the Siege of Fort Zeelandia. The Hokkien name translates as gambling for cakes: traditionally 63 mooncakes of different sizes are the prizes, ending with a single large champion cake. Today prizes can also be daily necessities, household appliances or money, and in the Philippines the game is widely known as the Mooncake Festival Dice Game.
