The Game of Cootie

Games of Chance

The Game of Cootie is a simple matching and collection game for two to four players, designed by American toy maker William H. Schaper and first released in 1948. Players take turns rolling a die to earn the parts needed to build a three-dimensional insect-like creature called a cootie, assembling a body, head, legs, eyes, and antennae in a required order until one player completes theirs first. The plastic cootie pieces snap together, giving the game a tactile, build-as-you-play quality that made it a lasting favorite with young children. Its simplicity and broad appeal earned it lasting recognition decades after release: in 2003 the Toy Industry Association placed Cootie on its Century of Toys List naming the 100 most memorable and creative toys of the twentieth century.
