Lotto 6/49 is one of three national lottery games run in Canada, launched on June 12, 1982, by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation. It was the first nationwide Canadian lottery to let players choose their own numbers rather than buy a ticket with numbers already printed on it, a format that had defined earlier national lottery games in the country. Draws are held twice each week, on Wednesday and Saturday, with winning numbers selected using a random number generator, and players win prizes according to how many of their chosen numbers match the drawn set. The game's player-selected number format proved popular enough that it led to the gradual phase-out of the older pre-printed ticket style of national lottery game across Canada, making Lotto 6/49 a lasting fixture of the country's lottery landscape and a model that later Canadian lottery games would follow.
