Finance is a board game for two to six players, first released in 1932 by designer Dan Layman with contributions from Louis and Fred Thun. It builds on the mechanics of Elizabeth Magie's earlier The Landlord's Game, sharing its core structure of moving pieces around a board, buying and developing properties, constructing houses, and drawing chance-style cards. Finance predates the commercial release of Monopoly and helped establish the property-trading board game format that Monopoly would later popularize on a much larger scale. Players accumulate wealth by acquiring properties and collecting payments from opponents who land on them, with the game ending when one player is left solvent while the others are bankrupted. Because it reached the market before Monopoly, Finance is studied by game historians as an important link connecting Magie's original teaching game to the modern mass-market classic.
