Hare and Tortoise

Race Games

Hare and Tortoise is a race-themed board game designed by David Parlett in 1974 and first published by Intellect Games, later picked up by Ravensburger in Germany in 1978 and by other publishers including Gibsons Games in Britain and Rio Grande Games in the United States. Two to six players move tokens around a numbered track by spending or collecting carrots and taking on debts, with the twist that reaching the finish line first is not enough, since a player must also arrive with exactly the right number of carrots remaining to win, rewarding careful resource management over simple speed. A typical game runs forty-five to sixty minutes after a brief setup, suits players eight and older, and involves only a low degree of chance. The design became the first winner of the Spiel des Jahres, Germany's leading board game of the year award, when it launched that prize in 1979, and the game has since sold roughly two million copies across its many language editions.
