Chinese checkers is an abstract strategy board game for two to six players, played on a star-shaped board, in which each player tries to move all of their marbles or pegs from their own starting corner to the opposite corner of the star by single steps or by jumping over other pieces. Despite its name, the game was not developed in China: it was created in Germany in 1892 under the name Stern-Halma, itself an adaptation of the earlier American game Halma, and the Chinese checkers name and star-shaped board became standard after American marketing of the game in the 1920s and 1930s.
