eXtreme Gammon, often written XG, is backgammon analysis software created by Xavier Dufaure de Citres and first made available in 2009 for Microsoft Windows and later for mobile devices. Rather than being a simple opponent to play against, the program is built as a study tool for serious backgammon players, using rollout based analysis to calculate the strongest available move or cube decision in a given position and to grade a player's own choices against that computed standard. The Financial Times described it as functioning as the optimal backgammon player, used by both casual and expert players to check their games. The software includes a performance rating system that scores a player's decisions across a match or session and compares that score to established benchmarks for different skill levels, letting players track their improvement over time. It has become one of the standard reference programs used by competitive backgammon players preparing for tournament play.
